Discussions on with the Central Institute of Classical Tamil
Discussions were underway between the two institutes for shaping up the course. Once it is finalised, it will be offered by the Central University in Tiruvarur. “It will not be mere language teaching. It will be different with studies in the classical language,” Mr.Sanjay told The Hindu.
The university has admitted 80 students in the integrated physics, chemistry, mathematics and M.A. English courses for the current academic year. These students were selected after conducting a combined examination for seven central universities. Later, they were called for counselling by their respective universities based on their score in the examination.
The examination was conducted for the Central universities of Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Kashmir and Tamil Nadu. A total of 6,000 students appeared for the examinations for 40 courses offered by these universities this year.
“It is heartening to note that girl and rural students have joined the university in considerable number, ” Mr.Sanjay said.
Buildings are coming up on the 516 acres of land acquired for the university at Vandampalayam near Tiruvarur town. Administrative building, faculty quarters and hostels for boys and girls would be constructed on the campus. Once they are completed, the university will shift to that place from its present temporary location at the Collectorate complex.
The university was inaugurated by Kapil Sibal, Union Minister for Human Resource Development, in the presence of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, on September 30, last year . The university was created through an act of Parliament.
