University's constituent college in Theni to admit students in a week

Madurai: The stage is set for the opening of a constituent college of Madurai Kamaraj University at Kottur in Theni district.

According to R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Vice-Chancellor, the process for admission of students to this co-education college would commence in a week and teaching staff were being appointed as per prescribed norms.
Three courses – B.A. (Tamil), B.A. (English) and B.A. (Economics) – were being offered initially and the college would start functioning anytime this month.

At the Academic Council meeting held here on Thursday, he said that the third constituent college of the university would start functioning from a temporary building offered by the Theni district administration. MKU had constituent colleges at Andipatti and Madurai.

“We are starting a college here based on a survey which said that the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education in Theni district is less than five per cent. Formal approval for the college will be obtained at the Syndicate meeting on Monday,” he said.

Dr. Karpaga Kumaravel said that land had been allotted for the college for which the Theni Collector had handed over the relevant records. “Construction will begin very soon and it would be completed in a year',” he said.

At the meeting, several motions were moved welcoming the Vice-Chancellor's announcement of adopting a village on Independence Day.

They also lauded the varsity's proposal to start community colleges as per the recommendation of the State Government.

Members P. M. Ajmal Khan and N. Thenpandian expressed that the university would be able to play an important role in the socio-economic development of the adopted village.

R. Jayaraman, Head, Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, said that the community college must focus on school drop-outs and enhance employability levels of the youth.
