36 engineering colleges in five districts under its fold
Madurai: The newly formed Anna University of Technology-Madurai will unveil a plan called ‘Madurai 2020' for the city's overall development.
Taking into account the requirements of the growing city, the university is keen to launch a concept under the banner of ‘Madurai-2020' in order to focus on the development of the city in all aspects during the next 10 years.
Addressing his maiden press conference here on Wednesday, R. Murugesan, the first Vice-Chancellor of Anna University of Technology, Madurai, said that he, along with his experienced faculty, would join the initiatives to create sufficient infrastructure for the city.
The university is functioning from the Madurai Kamaraj University's distance education wing premises on Alagarkoil Road here.
Search for land
Dr. Murugesan, who assumed office on June 21 for a three-year term, told reporters that the land required to set up the permanent campus would be decided soon.
“We have identified three sites around Madurai. The university will need about 100 acres.
A state-of-the-art campus will be ready in three years,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
The university, which was started by the State Government with effect from 2010-11 academic year, has in its fold 36 engineering colleges in five districts- Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram. To start with, the AUT-Madurai will offer M.E., MBA and MCA courses.
Industry interaction
Dr. Murugesan said that the university would give priority to industry interaction in its academic programmes. All engineering colleges under its jurisdiction would be asked to conduct coaching classes for Civil Services examination.
Civil Services preparation would be made an optional subject for the third and final year B.E. students.
Improvement of communication skills of rural students, personality development programmes and starting of ‘English Clubs' would receive attention, the Vice-Chancellor informed.
Besides, AUT-Madurai has a plan to establish a centre for entrepreneurship development.
Admission notification for PG programmes would be issued soon and more attention would be given towards framing a user-oriented curriculum.
Dr. Murugesan has authored 18 textbooks for engineering students in both English and Tamil.
With an experience of 34 years in teaching, he has written six lab manuals for technical education and published 55 papers in national/international journals. He thanked MKU Vice-Chancellor R. Karpaga Kumaravel for alloting space for Anna University in their city campus.
