New batch of MBBS students told to join classes on July 14

Chennai: The directorate of medical education has directed students who have secured admissions in state-run medical colleges during the phase 1 of the single window counselling to join classes a week in advance. As per the new directions, students should join classes on July 14, failing which their admissions would stand cancelled, said selection committee secretary Sheela Grace Jeevarathinam. The students were earlier asked to join classes on July 21.

Admissions to 1,483 seats in 14 colleges were completed on Friday. The cut-off stood at 198 for open category, 196 for backward class, 194.50 for backward class Muslims, 194 for most backward class, 189.75 for scheduled caste, 186.50 for scheduled caste (Arundadiar) and 181.50 for scheduled tribes. At the end of phase I of counselling, the waiting list was 70 in backward class, seven in backward class Muslims, 31 for most backward class and 29 in the scheduled categories.
“We have been awaiting Medical Council of India approval for admission to three medical colleges. The admission of third batch of students to Dharmapuri Medical College, and fresh batch of students to Villupuram and Tiruvarur colleges will begin in the third week of July. This phase of counselling will be called extended phase 1,” she said.

Apart from 137 students in the reserved category list, students from the forward caste will also be included in the extended phase where the selection committee is expecting to offer 255 seats. “We have advanced the joining dates because we want colleges to give us the names of students who have not joined the courses. Some students might go in for engineering and hence might not join the medical colleges where they have been allotted seats. These seats may go vacant.Only if we have the list we can include them for the counselling,” she added.
