34,000 drop out of race for BE seats

The largest number to skip counselling process before merit list is out

Chennai: More than 34,760-odd aspirants for engineering degree courses have dropped out of the race for BE/BTech admissions under the government quota this year at the preliminary stage itself.
This is the largest number of candidates who have skipped the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) process even before the merit list has been released for the single window counselling by Anna University.

This year, 2,02,312 application forms were sold for admission to BE/BTech courses under the government quota, which was a record in the history of the TNEA. “However, we have received only around 1,67,560 filled-in application forms. The remaining 34,760-odd aspirants who had purchased the forms did not submit them,” professor V Rhymend Uthariaraj, secretary, TNEA told The Times of India.

In contrast, last year, only 25,564 aspirants had given up their claim to participate in the single window counselling last year when 1,58,136 boys and girls had purchased the TNEA application forms.

A year before that in 2008, the number of students dropping out the race at the nascent stage was just 10,856.

According to Uthariaraj, a primary reason for a large number of students not submitting their application forms could be a low score or failure in the Plus Two board exams. “We had started issuing the application forms from May 3 whereas the result of the state board class XII exams was released only on May 14. It is quite likely that the students who have dropped out could have failed in the board exams or they could have failed to secure the minimum eligibility mark needed for admission into engineering colleges,” he explained.

As per latest eligibility norms, aspirants in the open competition category must secure 50% or above in mathematics, physics and chemistry put together. In the case of backward community students the minimum score would be less by 5%.

More than 1.67 lakh aspirants had purchased the application forms between May 3 and May 13, i.e., a day before the class XII examination results were declared. Another reason for this could be that some of the aspirants could have already booked a seat in self-financing engineering colleges in a preferred branch of study under the management quota.
