Chennai: Research institutions should reinvent themselves periodically to update their knowledge and keep a close watch on technological developments in other countries, said G. Thyagarajan, former director, Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI).
Speaking at the ‘Foundation Day' of the institute here on Saturday, Dr. Thyagarajan said the CLRI must conduct a technology forecasting programme to gain an understanding of future advancements in science and technology.
“Attracting talents is the biggest challenge to many institutions. To overcome this, they should constantly upgrade their policies and be on the lookout for prospective researchers,” he said.
Delivering the ‘Foundation Day' lecture, Vijay Viswanathan, president, Diabetes Research Centre, spoke on awareness and prevention of diabetes.
Terming diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and heart attack as major health problems in the country, he observed that Indians are genetically susceptible to diabetes.
Quoting a recent Chennai-specific survey, he said that nearly 10 per cent of boys and 13 per cent of girls in the 8-12 age group are overweight. Among teenagers, nine per cent of boys and 16 per cent of girls are overweight.
“In adults too, obesity is skewed towards women. So it is not surprising to see the increase in the incidence of heart attacks and diabetes among women,” he said.
Healthy dietary habits should begin at an early age and children must be made aware of these silent killers, with obesity being the key cause. A balanced diet, moderate exercise and an active lifestyle could go a long way in preventing the non-communicable diseases, he added.
Marking the ‘Foundation Day', research students and guides were felicitated with special awards, and scholarships were presented to the children of CLRI staff.
