Students take out rally
Cuddalore: Students of the Periyar Government Arts College here abstained from classes on Monday and took out a rally from the college to the Collectorate, opposing the move to confer unitary university status on certain government arts colleges.
A spokesperson of the students said that the government had proposed to elevate the status of certain government arts colleges at Kumbakonam, Coimbatore, Karaikudi and Chennai and leading private colleges as unitary universities.
If it were done these institutions would be empowered to fix their own fee structure which would obviously be higher than what was being collected now. Therefore, it would impose heavy financial burden on the students and their families and affect their studies.
Principal K.Ranganathan said that the protest rally was not pertaining to any issue concerning the Periyar Government Arts College.
The student representatives, later, handed over a memorandum to District Collector P.Seetharaman appealing to take up the issue with the government.
