International Conference on Climate Change
Tiruchi: More than 500 scientists, professors, researchers, industrialists and students from India and abroad are expected to participate in the ‘International Conference on Climate Change and Bioresource (ICCCB-2010)’ to be organised by the Department of Biotechnology, Bharathidasan University, from February 9 to 12.
The conference will focus on emerging challenges in agriculture, forest and medicine, impact of climate change and approaches in bio-resource management. The specific areas of focus constitute biodiversity (microbes – insects – plants), ecological interactions (biotic and abiotic), biological productivity, drug discovery and development, global warming, habitat degradation, conventional farming practices, eco-restoration initiatives, promotion of traditional practices (agriculture and medicine), biotechnological approaches (rDNA and Nanotechnology), carbon sequestration, and global initiatives (international summits and legal regulations), according to S. Sivaramakrishnan, Organising Secretary.
Climate change, the biggest threat to nature and humanity in the current century, reflects in melting of glaciers, rising sea levels, stronger storms, higher floods, and less snow in the northern hemisphere and more drought in the south. Climate change has ceased to be a scientific curiosity, and is no longer just one of the many environmental and regulatory concerns.
In this backdrop, the conference would be an ideal platform for the researchers, industrialists, environmentalists, and policy makers to share their experience and views, and bring out recent status and developments in the climate change issues, according to the organising committee.
