" Graduation certificates of 1,200 nursing students withheld"

Genuineness of marksheets of some students being verified
  • 30 Chennai students allegedly submitted fake qualifying marksheets
  • School Education Department instructed to check such instances in other colleges
Chennai: Provisional graduation certificates of 1,200 students who had completed their three-year diploma in Nursing in 2008 in 20 government-run institutions across the State have been withheld as some of them had apparently provided incorrect information about their class XII results.

According to sources, about 30 nursing students in Chennai had allegedly submitted fake marksheets when they were admitted to the Madras Medical College and Stanley Medical College three years ago. Fifteen students each from the two colleges were found to have indulged in the malpractice during a routine verification.
It is a customary exercise for medical institutions to verify the submitted marksheets before students are issued their diplomas.

The investigation by the college authorities revealed that they were not original. The authorities have sent the marksheets to the School Education Department's examination wing for confirmation. The department has also been instructed to check for such instances in other colleges.

MMC Dean J. Mohanasundaram said, "Some students who completed their diploma in Nursing have not been issued their certificates as the Education Department has been asked to verify the genuineness of the marksheets they submitted. When they [marksheets] were verified we found that some were bogus. Verification of the marksheets of the entire batch is going on. Once the process is completed, the certificates will be issued."

According to him, four schools are yet to revert to the Education Department with details. Most of the students who provided the forged marksheets were girls, he said.
